The Option Method is a proven and effective way for uncovering and eliminating the root cause of anxiety. The remainder of this post will walk you through how to use the Option Method on yourself. We have real-life examples of individuals using the method to uncover and eliminate negative emotions here.

The following is taken from our partners at Dialogues in Self Discovery:

The essential elements of the dialogue are to identify and clarify exactly what the unhappiness is about, using such questions as:

Note: unhappiness is defined as feeling a negative emotion

What are you unhappy (feeling a negative emotion) about?

What is there about that, that makes you unhappy?

Then, asking questions designed to find out your specific reasons for being unhappy, such as:

Why are you unhappy about that?

What are you afraid would happen if you were not unhappy about that?

What are you afraid it would mean if you were not unhappy about that?

And, ultimately, questioning the reason(s) for why you think you should be unhappy, such as:

Why do you believe that?

Why do you believe being happy/neutral would be bad for you right now?

The end result of the Option Method Dialogue reveals:

  1. Why you are unhappy
  2. Why you believe you have to be unhappy
  3. Why you believe it would be bad for you to be happy
  4. The choices you have made that led to your unhappiness
  5. The fears you have about your ability to be stop being unhappy
  6. How your specific feelings are tied to specific beliefs
  7. What you really want and were not realizing
